New Jazz Underground Brings Their Sound to Shanghai
Last week, Shanghai’s jazz scene got something special. New Jazz Underground, a talented trio from New York, played a three night set at Jazz at Lincoln Center, located on East Nanjing Road near the iconic Bund. Outer Lane Studio was there to cover the performances through both photography and videography.
The group’s music blended classic jazz with a modern edge, creating an atmosphere that felt both familiar and fresh. Jazz at Lincoln Center proved to be a prime location that gave each night an inviting and vibrant energy.
Our Media Approach
For this project, we were asked to focus specifically on the band, capturing full length sets, as well as having wandering cameras for up close and dynamic moments of each band member.
With photography, we focused on dynamic moments: intensity of solos, heavy and exciting movement and band member emotions.
Our video coverage leaned into movement and rhythm. We mixed steady wides with close angles to bring viewers closer to the performance. Alongside the live sets, we also shot behind the scenes moments to give a fuller picture of the trio’s personality and dynamic.
Why This Matters
At Outer Lane Studio, live coverage is about more than just documenting. We aim to create a visual record that captures the atmosphere as much as the performance itself. For New Jazz Underground, this Shanghai run was an important stop in their growing international presence. Our job was to make sure the look and feel of these nights could be shared long after the last song ended.
Jazz at Lincoln Center, just steps away from the Bund, proved to be the perfect setting for the trio’s sound. We’re excited to share more content on both our website and Instagram.
